A key snapping off in the ignition is more common than people think — worn brass keys get brittle, and a hard twist at the wrong angle is all it takes. The good news: in most cases the ignition cylinder itself is fine. The fix is extracting the broken piece, not replacing the whole ignition.
Don’t do this first
Resist the urge to dig at the broken key with tweezers, a paperclip, or pliers. Pushing the broken piece deeper into the cylinder is the single most common reason a simple extraction turns into a full cylinder replacement — which costs more and takes longer. If the key is visible and you can grip it cleanly, a gentle straight pull is fine. If it’s flush or below the key slot, stop and call.
What we actually do on the call
Our techs carry key extraction tools built for this specific job — thin, hooked picks designed to slide alongside the broken blade and back it out along the same path it broke, without scoring the cylinder pins. On most vehicles this is a 10–20 minute job at the vehicle, no tow required. Once the fragment is out, we cut and program a new key on the spot for cars we carry key stock for, so you’re not making a second appointment.
When it’s more than an extraction
Occasionally the break happens because the cylinder itself is failing — worn tumblers, a previous bad key cut, or corrosion. If that’s what we find, we’ll tell you plainly before doing anything further; we don’t push a bigger repair to pad a bill. That’s the same honesty we bring to every call: we quote what the job actually needs, not what maximizes the invoice.
