Most of what you’ll find online about losing every car key assumes either a dealership tow or an exotic car with a complicated immobilizer system. If you’re standing next to a regular sedan or SUV with zero working keys, here’s what actually happens.
First: you don’t automatically need a tow
For most mainstream makes and models, a mobile locksmith can cut and program a new key or fob on-site, in the parking lot or driveway where the car already is. We carry dealer-grade key-cutting and programming equipment for roughly 40 makes, so for the vehicles we commonly see day to day, there’s no reason to involve a flatbed.
What we actually need from you
- The car itself, with the VIN accessible (door jamb sticker, dashboard, or registration)
- Proof you’re the owner — registration or title, something that shows the car is yours
- Access to the vehicle so we can read the immobilizer system and cut a correctly-shaped blank
We don’t need your old key, a part number, or a dealership code — that’s the point of doing this from scratch.
The actual process
- We identify the exact key/fob type the vehicle takes.
- We cut a new key blank to match the ignition/door lock.
- We program the key or fob to the car’s immobilizer so the engine will actually start — a cut blank alone won’t do that on most vehicles made in the last 20+ years.
- We test it in the ignition and the doors before we leave.
What can slow it down
Some vehicles require more than one key already in the system to add a new one, or have anti-theft systems with a timed lockout after a failed attempt. These aren’t common on everyday cars, but if your vehicle has one, we’ll tell you upfront rather than surprise you partway through.
What it doesn’t require
No dealership appointment, no waiting days for a part to ship, and — for the vehicles we commonly service — no tow truck. For current pricing, see our pricing page; we don’t quote costs in a blog post because it depends on the make, model, and key type.
