We get asked constantly whether a smart lock is ‘better’ than a traditional deadbolt. The honest answer is they solve different problems, and the right choice depends on what you actually want out of your front door.
What a traditional high-security deadbolt gets you
- Mechanical reliability — no batteries, no app, no firmware to go wrong
- A simple rekey path if you move, change roommates, or lose a key
- Typically the stronger physical resistance to forced entry and bumping, when it’s a genuine high-security cylinder rather than a big-box builder-grade lock
What a smart lock gets you
- Keyless entry — codes, fobs, or app-based unlocking, useful for guests, dog walkers, or short-term rentals
- Remote lock/unlock and activity logs, if that matters to you
- No physical key to lose, though most smart locks still have a mechanical override
What a smart lock doesn’t automatically get you
A smart lock is only as secure as the deadbolt mechanism behind the electronics. Some smart locks use a lower-grade mechanical core than a dedicated high-security deadbolt, so ‘smart’ and ‘secure’ aren’t the same question. It’s also one more thing with a battery to maintain and a network connection to trust.
Questions worth asking before you buy
- Does the smart lock’s physical cylinder meet the same grade as a traditional high-security deadbolt, or is the electronics the main selling point?
- What happens when the battery dies — is there a reliable mechanical backup?
- Do you actually need remote access and codes, or do you just want a physical lock that works?
- If you rent, does your landlord allow a lock swap, and can it be reversed cleanly at move-out?
Our take
Neither option is universally ‘better’ — a rowhome owner who wants to hand out codes to a dog walker has a different need than someone who just wants a reliable mechanical lock they never think about. We install and service both, and we’ll walk through the tradeoffs with you rather than push whichever is more expensive.
