Audi has used six distinct immobilizer architectures over the past 30 years, often running multiple generations in parallel across the lineup at the same time. The standard aftermarket-vendor classification breaks Audi keys into IMMO (early transponder), J518 (module-based proximity for big sedans), KESSY (early A8 proximity), RB4/RB8 (mid-era A3/A4), MICRONAS / NEC (R8, TT, Q3 specialty chips), BCM2 (modern encrypted era), MQB (current compact platform), and MLB (current large platform). Find your exact year + model below to see which immobilizer your Audi runs.
Audi fob casings come in several eras: the chrome-bordered MMI fob (B8/B8.5 generation), the slim flush fob (B9/C8 generation), and the new paddle-style fob on e-tron EVs. Blade cuts: HU66 across most modern Audi. Common Audi gotcha: the dashboard's 'KEY NOT IN VEHICLE' message can mean fob battery (most common), proximity-antenna failure (rarer), or — on early B8 cars — a known TSB on the trunk-mounted antenna module. We diagnose before quoting a key replacement that might not be the actual fix. BCM2 / MLB component-protection requires platform-specific equipment most aftermarket tools don't include — we carry the dealer-grade VAS toolset plus aftermarket equivalents (Abrites / VVDI) for full coverage.
