Key technology

Volkswagen key & immobilizer technology.

Most generic locksmiths can't program Volkswagen — different brands run different immobilizer architectures and require platform-specific equipment. Volkswagen's system has evolved across multiple generations, and each one changes what's possible. Find your model below.

VW shares the same VW Group immobilizer platforms as Audi but with significantly cheaper fob shell economics — VW fob shells run $50–$100 aftermarket vs. Audi's $200+, so VW key work is meaningfully cheaper than the equivalent Audi job for the same underlying programming labor. Standard aftermarket-vendor classification breaks VW keys into IMMO (early Megamos transponder), KESSY (early Touareg proximity), BCM2 (mid-era encrypted, including the second-gen Touareg), and MQB (current compact + mid-size platform across Golf / Jetta / Tiguan / Atlas / Passat). Find your year + model below. The current Jetta / Tiguan / Atlas / Taos fobs come in two trims: the slim 'remote-only' style (no proximity) on base trims and the smart-key proximity fob on SE/SEL trims — confirming trim level by VIN before dispatch is critical because the keys aren't interchangeable. ID.4 and ID.7 EVs use the related MEB platform with EV-specific charge / wakeup features. Common VW gotcha: online aftermarket key blanks often arrive without the right transponder chip — owners buy a $30 'VW key' on Amazon, hand it to us, and we discover it's a non-MQB chip that BCM2 won't accept. We supply the right blank or guide you to verified vendors. Blade cuts: HU66 across all modern VW. Note: the 2009–2014 Routan minivan is actually a Chrysler / Dodge Grand Caravan rebadged for VW — programmed using Stellantis procedures, not VW.

Common problems

Common Volkswagen key problems & what we do about them.

Before you assume you need a new key, here's what usually goes wrong with Volkswagen keys — and how we diagnose before charging.

Why won't my VW key program after I bought it online?

Most online VW key blanks aren't pre-coded for component protection — they're virgin transponders. We need dealer-grade equipment to write the BCM2 component-protection data to the new key. We can program a key you supply if it's the right blank, or supply and program one ourselves.

Why does my VW Tiguan/Atlas say 'key not detected'?

Most often a dead fob battery or a fob that's drifted out of sync after a 12V battery jump. We diagnose on-site: replace battery, resync, or — if the fob is failing — cut and program a new one.

Lost the only key to my VW Jetta — what now?

All-keys-lost on Jetta (and most VW models) is routine for us. We arrive with the right blank, pull immobilizer data, generate the key file, cut to VIN, and program on-site. 30–60 minutes typical. No tow.

Can I avoid the VW dealer for a spare key?

Yes — and you should, on price alone. We do VW spares in your driveway in under an hour for typically half of dealer pricing. Bring the working key plus VIN.

FAQ

Common Volkswagen questions.

Can you do a Jetta or Tiguan smart key on-site?

Yes — Jetta and Tiguan are the most common VW calls. Smart key with proximity entry, programmed in your driveway in 20–30 minutes typical.

What's MQB and how does it affect my VW?

MQB is VW Group's modular platform that underlies most current Jetta, Golf, Passat, Tiguan, Atlas, Audi A3/Q3, and similar. Programming uses BCM2 immobilizer. Same approach across MQB platform vehicles.

Do you handle ID.4 EV keys?

Yes — ID.4 uses the standard VW BCM2 platform. EV powertrain doesn't change key programming.

What about older VW Beetles, GTIs, or Passats?

Older VWs use earlier immobilizer generations (Megamos, then second-gen, then BCM-based). Still within our equipment coverage. Bring year and VIN when you call.
