Key technology

RAM key & immobilizer technology.

Most generic locksmiths can't program RAM — different brands run different immobilizer architectures and require platform-specific equipment. RAM's system has evolved across multiple generations, and each one changes what's possible. Find your model below.

RAM is the workhorse of the Stellantis lineup — same five chip generations as Dodge / Chrysler / Jeep, but with the heaviest fleet-volume use case. The Sentry Key SKIM era (1998–2006) used a Chrysler-specific RKEM module that requires either two working keys for OBD relearn OR a SKIM bypass (which we carry). The combined transponder+remote flip key era (2007–2013) introduced the iconic FOBIK keys that integrate the chip and remote into one housing — common on second-gen RAM 1500. The Smart Key push-to-start era (2014–2018) added BCM / RFHub programming on Laramie / Longhorn / Limited trims. The current Stellantis proximity fob (2019–Present) covers the latest RAM 1500 (DT), 1500 REV EV, Ramcharger REEV, ProMaster, and HD models. ProMaster (full-size) and ProMaster City (compact, discontinued 2022) are Fiat Ducato / Doblo derivatives with Fiat-style ID46 / ID48 / Megamos AES transponders depending on year — same Stellantis toolset we use on the rest of the lineup. Common RAM gotcha: 2014–2018 ProMaster has a known RFHub failure mode on high-mileage fleet vans that fakes 'keys won't program' — we diagnose the RFHub first.

Hybrid & EV — read this first

If you drive a RAM hybrid or EV.

RAM's electrification is just arriving — RAM 1500 REV (full battery EV, launching 2025) and Ramcharger (range-extender EV with onboard generator, launching 2025) both use the standard Stellantis proximity fob platform. Programming is identical to gas variants. The thing that catches EV / REEV owners off-guard is that a marginal 12V auxiliary battery (separate from the high-voltage propulsion pack) causes 'intermittent fob' symptoms that look like a key problem. We test the 12V FIRST on every RAM EV / REEV call. Charge-port behavior (NACS / CCS) doesn't affect key programming. The discontinued PHEV-adjacent eTorque mild-hybrid 1500 (2019+) uses standard Stellantis Smart Key with no special handling.

Common problems

Common RAM key problems & what we do about them.

Before you assume you need a new key, here's what usually goes wrong with RAM keys — and how we diagnose before charging.

Why is my RAM Smart Key not detected?

Most common (in this order): dead CR2032 fob battery — a $3 replacement we do in 60 seconds; weak 12V vehicle battery (especially on Cummins HD trucks where 12V parasitic draw is high); fob desync after a 12V battery service; or a failing RFHub module. We diagnose first — a new key won't fix any of these except the last.

I lost both RAM keys — can a locksmith really do all-keys-lost on-site?

Yes. All-keys-lost on RAM 1998 to current is routine for us. We pull the immobilizer PIN from your VIN, connect to the OBD2 port, talk to the BCM / RFHub, generate the key file, cut to your VIN, program. 30–60 min typical. Bring proof of ownership and your VIN — mandatory on every all-keys-lost job.

RAM 1500 push-to-start intermittent in cold weather — is it the key or the truck?

Almost always one of three things: dead CR2032 in the fob, marginal 12V battery (cold-weather Cummins owners hit this often), or fob desync after a battery service. We test all three before quoting key work. Cummins diesels in particular have aggressive starter draw that exposes a weak 12V.

ProMaster fleet keys keep failing — is the issue the keys or the BCM?

Older ProMaster (2014–2018) has a known RFHub module weakness on high-mileage fleet vehicles. If keys fail randomly across the fleet, the issue is the truck-side hardware, not the keys. We diagnose the RFHub before quoting key replacement so you don't waste money on keys that won't fix the problem.

FAQ

Common RAM questions.

What chip does my RAM use — Sentry Key, flip key, or Smart Key?

Roughly: pre-1998 = no chip; 1998–2006 = Sentry Key (SKIM transponder); 2007–2013 = combined transponder + remote flip key with OBD programming; 2014–2018 = Smart Key push-to-start option on premium trims (BCM / RFHub); 2019+ = current Stellantis proximity fob. Same chip family as Dodge, Chrysler, and Jeep — VIN tells us the exact path.

Can you do a RAM 1500 smart key replacement on a job site?

Yes — RAM smart keys are commonly replaced on construction sites, fleet yards, and remote driveways across our markets. We come to you, pull the immobilizer PIN from your VIN, program the new key in 25–40 min for spares or 30–60 min for all-keys-lost. Volume pricing and Net 30 for fleet operations.

What about RAM ProMaster and ProMaster City commercial vans?

ProMaster (full-size, Fiat-derived) and ProMaster City (compact, also Fiat-derived) use the Stellantis platform. We service them for delivery, plumbing, electrical, last-mile fleets, and Amazon DSPs. Volume programs and Net 30 for fleet operators.

Do you handle the heavy-duty RAM 2500 / 3500 / 4500 / 5500 trucks?

Yes. Same Stellantis key platform as the 1500 for most model years. HD diesel models occasionally have unique immobilizer behavior tied to the Cummins engine ECU — we handle this with dealer-grade tools. Bring VIN before dispatch on diesel HDs.
