Dealer vs. mobile locksmith

Honda key — dealer vs. us.

We do the same programming as the Honda dealer, with the same dealer-grade equipment, on-site instead of at the service drive.

Key technology

Honda key & immobilizer technology.

Most generic locksmiths can't program Honda — different brands run different immobilizer architectures and require platform-specific equipment. Honda's system has evolved across multiple generations, and each one changes what's possible. Find your model below.

Honda's chip-family history is the cleanest in the Japanese mainstream after Toyota, and that's why aftermarket support is excellent across all five eras. The pre-1996 cut-only era was mechanical-only with no immobilizer. Megamos ID13 (1996–2002, fixed code) is the simplest — cloned on a handheld in minutes. HO01 (2002–2006, Honda-specific high-security) requires Honda-specific cutter and OBD programmer — older Pilot, Odyssey, Element fall here. Philips ID46 / PCF7936 (2007–2012) introduced wider OBD-port programming via Honda scan tool. Honda G chip / Philips ID47 (2013–current) is the highest-security Honda transponder, requiring an immobilizer-module clear-and-relearn for all-keys-lost. The Honda Smart Key proximity platform (2014+) layers push-to-start on top of the underlying chip. Every era requires a VIN-derived PIN we extract in-truck. Common Honda gotcha: 2014–2018 Accord, Civic, CR-V can be either G chip transponder OR Smart Key depending on trim — VIN confirms which before we dispatch the right blank. Honda Smart Keys (2017+ in particular) carry the well-documented relay-attack vulnerability — we recommend a Faraday pouch on every replacement. Acura runs identical underlying tech with luxury fob casings, so an Acura key is a Honda key with a different shell.

Don't see your exact model or year? Call us with your VIN — we cover every Honda model on the road, and a 30-second VIN check confirms the chip type and price before dispatch.

Hybrid & EV — read this first

If you drive a Honda hybrid or EV.

Honda's hybrid + EV lineup (Insight, Accord Hybrid, CR-V Hybrid, Civic Hybrid, Clarity PHEV/FCEV, CR-Z, Prologue EV) all use the standard Honda Smart Key push-to-start platform — programming is identical to gas variants on Insight / Accord Hybrid / CR-V Hybrid / Civic Hybrid. The thing that catches hybrid owners off-guard is that a marginal 12V auxiliary battery (separate from the high-voltage hybrid pack) causes 'intermittent fob' symptoms that look exactly like a key problem. We test the 12V FIRST on every hybrid Honda call before quoting key work — usually a $40 fix at most parts stores. Two exceptions worth flagging: the Clarity FCEV (hydrogen) is rare and dealer-supported, and the Prologue EV (2024+) is built by GM on the Ultium platform — programming is GM-style, not Honda. We confirm with VIN before dispatch on Prologue.

Common problems

Common Honda key problems & what we do about them.

Before you assume you need a new key, here's what usually goes wrong with Honda keys — and how we diagnose before charging.

Why is my Honda Smart Key not detected?

Most common (in this order): dead CR2032 fob battery — a $3 replacement we do in 60 seconds; weak 12V vehicle battery (especially on Insight / Clarity hybrids); fob desync after 12V battery service; or a failing antenna ring around the ignition. We diagnose first — a new key won't fix any of these except the last. Honda fobs in particular eat batteries fast; check that first.

I lost both Honda keys — can a locksmith really do all-keys-lost on-site?

Yes. All-keys-lost on Honda 1998 to current is routine for us. We pull the immobilizer PIN from your VIN, connect to the OBD2 port, generate the key file, cut to your VIN, program to the ECU. 2013+ G-chip cars require an immobilizer-module relearn (adds 10–15 min vs older years) but it's still done in your driveway. 30–60 min typical. Bring proof of ownership and your VIN.

Civic / Accord intermittent push-to-start — is it the key or the car?

Almost always one of three things: dead CR2032 in the fob, marginal 12V battery (cold weather), or fob desync after a battery service. We test all three before quoting key work. Honda's well-known relay-attack vulnerability on smart keys (2017+) is a separate issue — we explain Faraday-pouch mitigation during the visit.

My Honda fob got water damage or the buttons stopped — fix or replace?

If the case cracked or the buttons stopped responding, often we can swap the internal board into a new shell ($50–$120) instead of replacing the whole programmed fob. If the chip is shorted internally, then it's a full replacement. We diagnose first.

FAQ

Common Honda questions.

What chip does my Honda use — Megamos, HO01, ID46, or G chip?

Roughly: pre-1996 = no chip; 1996–2002 = Megamos ID13 (fixed code); 2002–2006 = HO01 high-security transponder; 2007–2012 = Philips ID46 (PCF7936); 2013–current = Honda G chip (Philips ID47, advanced encryption). Push-to-start models (2014+) layer the Smart Key proximity system on top. Tell us your year and model — we confirm the exact chip from your VIN before dispatch.

Can you do a Honda Odyssey key on-site at my home?

Yes — Odyssey is one of the most common family-vehicle calls in our queue. We come to your driveway, program the smart key (or transponder for older years), 20–30 min for spares with a working key, 30–60 min for all-keys-lost. Bring year, model, VIN, and proof of ownership.

What about Honda Civic Type R, Si, and Sport performance trims?

Type R, Si, and Sport trims all use the standard Honda immobilizer platform — same chip family as the base Civic of the same year. The performance bits are mechanical and engine, not the immobilizer. Programming is identical.

Honda CR-V smart key replacement — how does it work?

Modern CR-V (2017+) uses the Honda G chip + Smart Entry with proximity start. We pull the immobilizer PIN from your VIN, program the new fob to your CR-V's ECU, hand it to you. 25–40 min on-site typical. Same dealer-grade equipment, ~half the dealer price.
