Key technology

Toyota key & immobilizer technology.

Most generic locksmiths can't program Toyota — different brands run different immobilizer architectures and require platform-specific equipment. Toyota's system has evolved across multiple generations, and each one changes what's possible. Find your model below.

Toyota's chip-family history is the cleanest in the Asian lineup, and that's why aftermarket support is excellent across all five eras. The pre-1998 cut-only era was mechanical-only with no immobilizer. Texas 4C (1998–2002, fixed code) is the simplest — cloned on a handheld in minutes. Texas 4D-67 (2003–2009, rolling code) introduced encryption and required a professional programmer. Texas G chip / 4D-72 (2010–2018) needed OBD-based T-code tools. Texas H chip (4D H, 2013–current) is the highest-security generation, requiring an immobilizer-reset routine on all-keys-lost. The Smart Key push-to-start platform (2012+) adds proximity authentication on top of the underlying chip. Every era requires a VIN-derived PIN code that we extract from Toyota's vendor database in-truck — most owners assume they have to call the dealer for the PIN. They don't. We handle it. Common Toyota gotcha: 2013–2018 Camry, Corolla, RAV4, Highlander, Tacoma, Tundra, 4Runner, Sequoia can be either G or H chip depending on trim and assembly plant — VIN confirms which before we dispatch the right blank.

Texas H Chip (4D H)

Highest-Security Toyota Transponder
~2013–Present
Locksmith support ✅ Yes
All keys lost ✅ Yes
  • Texas Instruments H chip (4D H) — highest-security Toyota transponder
  • Immobilizer-reset routine required for all-keys-lost
  • VIN-derived PIN required, extracted in-truck
  • Camry, Corolla, RAV4, 4Runner, Tacoma, Tundra, Highlander, Sequoia of this era — overlaps G chip 2013–2018; current Toyota lineup defaults to H or Smart Key
Common chassis: Camry (2018–)Corolla (2019–)RAV4 (2019–)4Runner (late)Tacoma (late)Tundra (2022–)Highlander (2020–)Sequoia (2023–)
Customer takeaway: Texas H chip era — fully serviceable on-site. Immobilizer-reset routine adds 10–15 min to all-keys-lost vs G chip but still done in your driveway, not the dealer.

Don't see your exact model or year? Call us with your VIN — we cover every Toyota model on the road, and a 30-second VIN check confirms the chip type and price before dispatch.

Hybrid & EV — read this first

If you drive a Toyota hybrid or EV.

Toyota's hybrid lineup (Prius, Prius Prime, RAV4 Hybrid, Camry Hybrid, Highlander Hybrid, Sienna Hybrid, Sequoia Hybrid, bZ4X EV) all use the standard Smart Key push-to-start platform — programming is identical to gas variants. The thing that catches hybrid owners off-guard is that a marginal 12V auxiliary battery (separate from the high-voltage hybrid pack) causes 'intermittent fob' symptoms that look exactly like a key problem. We test the 12V FIRST on every hybrid Toyota call before quoting key work. If it's the 12V, that's a $40 fix at most parts stores; if it's actually the key, we replace it. The Prius Prime and bZ4X EV add charge-port behavior but neither affects key programming.

Common problems

Common Toyota key problems & what we do about them.

Before you assume you need a new key, here's what usually goes wrong with Toyota keys — and how we diagnose before charging.

Why is my Toyota Smart Key not detected?

Most common (in this order): dead CR2032 fob battery — a $3 replacement we do in 60 seconds; a weak 12V vehicle battery (especially on Prius / RAV4 Hybrid); the fob itself out of programming sync after a 12V battery service; or a failing antenna ring around the ignition. We diagnose first — a new key won't fix any of these except the last.

I lost both Toyota keys — can a locksmith really do all-keys-lost on-site?

Yes. All-keys-lost on Toyota 1997 to current is routine for us. We pull the immobilizer PIN from your VIN, connect to the OBD2 port, generate the key file, cut to your VIN, program to your ECU. 30–60 minutes typical. Bring proof of ownership (registration or title) and your VIN — that's mandatory on every all-keys-lost job.

Camry / Corolla intermittent push-to-start — is it the key or the car?

Almost always one of three things: dead CR2032 in the fob, marginal 12V battery (especially in cold weather), or fob desync after a battery service. We test all three before quoting key work. If it's actually the key, we replace it; if it's the car, we tell you and don't charge for a key you don't need.

My Tundra key got water damage — fix or replace?

If the case cracked or the buttons stopped responding, often we can swap the internal board into a new shell ($50–$120) instead of replacing the whole programmed fob. If the chip is shorted or corroded internally, then it's a full replacement. We diagnose first.

FAQ

Common Toyota questions.

What chip does my Toyota use — 4C, 4D-67, G chip, or H chip?

Roughly: pre-1998 = no chip; 1998–2002 = Texas 4C (fixed code); 2003–2009 = Texas 4D-67 (encrypted rolling code); 2010–2018 = Texas G chip; 2013–current = Texas H chip (highest security). 2013–2018 overlaps G and H — we confirm with VIN before dispatch. Push-to-start models (2012+) layer the Smart Key proximity system on top of the chip.

Can you do a Tacoma key at a job site or trailhead?

Yes — Tacoma all-keys-lost calls at construction sites, trailheads, and remote driveways are common. We come to wherever the truck is parked, pull the immobilizer PIN from your VIN, cut and program on-site. No tow needed.

Will the key you program work as well as a Toyota dealer key?

Yes. We use OEM-equivalent blanks with the same Texas chip family Toyota specs from the factory, programmed with dealer-grade equipment. Functionally identical for the lifetime of the vehicle — same proximity behavior, same anti-lockout, same panic / trunk functions.

What about the Prius and Prius Prime — anything different?

Prius and Prius Prime use the standard Toyota Smart Key platform with proximity entry and push-to-start. Programming is identical to other Toyota Smart Key models. The hybrid 12V auxiliary battery doesn't affect key programming, but a weak 12V is the most common cause of intermittent fob behavior on Prius — we test it first.
