Key technology

Infiniti key & immobilizer technology.

Most generic locksmiths can't program Infiniti — different brands run different immobilizer architectures and require platform-specific equipment. Infiniti's system has evolved across multiple generations, and each one changes what's possible. Find your model below.

Infiniti's chip-platform history is the same Nissan NATS / Intelligent Key family — that's why aftermarket support is excellent across all eras. The pre-1998 era was mechanical-only with no immobilizer; older I30, J30, Q45, QX4 of this generation. Early Nissan NATS (1998–2003) introduced basic transponder; covers older I30 / I35, late Q45, early G35. Encrypted NATS (2004–2010) added rolling code encryption; G35 / G37, FX35 / FX45, M35 / M45, EX35 / EX37 of this era, plus the early QX56. Nissan Intelligent Key proximity (2007+ on Infiniti, ahead of Nissan mainstream) layered push-to-start on top of NATS; G37, M37 / M56, FX37 / FX50, JX35, Q50 / Q60, Q70, QX50 / QX55 / QX60 / QX70 / QX80 — every current Infiniti since the late 2000s. Every era requires a VIN-derived PIN we extract from the Nissan vendor database in-truck. Common Infiniti gotcha: the QX80 (2011+) and its predecessor QX56 (2004–2010) share key DNA with the Nissan Armada / Patrol — same programming, distinct Infiniti fob shell. Infiniti Intelligent Keys on 2014+ models carry the known Nissan-platform relay-attack vulnerability — we recommend a Faraday pouch on every replacement.

Hybrid & EV — read this first

If you drive a Infiniti hybrid or EV.

Infiniti's hybrid lineup is narrow — Q50 Hybrid (2014–2019), Q70 Hybrid (2014–2019), M35h (2012–2013), and QX60 Hybrid (2014–2017). All use the standard Nissan Intelligent Key platform with proximity entry — programming is identical to gas variants. The thing that catches hybrid Infiniti owners off-guard is that a marginal 12V auxiliary battery (separate from the high-voltage hybrid pack) causes 'intermittent fob' symptoms that look exactly like a key problem. We test the 12V FIRST on every hybrid Infiniti call before quoting key work — usually a $40 fix at most parts stores. Infiniti has no current dedicated EV in the US market as of 2026, though the Q Inspiration concepts hint at a future EV platform.

Common problems

Common Infiniti key problems & what we do about them.

Before you assume you need a new key, here's what usually goes wrong with Infiniti keys — and how we diagnose before charging.

Why is my Infiniti Intelligent Key not detected?

Most common (in this order): dead CR2032 fob battery — a $3 fix we do in 60 seconds; weak 12V vehicle battery (especially on Q50 Hybrid, QX60 Hybrid); fob desync after a 12V service; or a failing antenna ring around the push-start button. We diagnose first — a new key won't fix any of these except the last. Infiniti fobs eat batteries fast in cold weather; check that before assuming the key has failed.

I lost both Infiniti keys — can a locksmith really do all-keys-lost on-site?

Yes. All-keys-lost on Infiniti 1998 to current is routine for us. We pull the immobilizer PIN from your VIN, connect to the OBD2 port, generate the key file, cut to your VIN, program to the ECU. 30–60 min typical depending on era. Bring proof of ownership and VIN — we don't dispatch on AKL without it.

Q50 / QX60 intermittent push-to-start — key or car?

Almost always one of three things: dead CR2032 in the fob, marginal 12V battery, or fob desync after a 12V service. We test all three before quoting key work. Infiniti Intelligent Key on 2014+ models carries the known Nissan-platform relay-attack vulnerability — we recommend a Faraday pouch on every replacement.

My Infiniti fob shell cracked or buttons stopped — fix or replace?

If the case cracked or buttons stopped responding, we often swap the internal board into a fresh shell ($60–$140 depending on model) rather than reprogramming a whole new key. If the chip itself is shorted, then it's a full replacement. We diagnose first — board swaps are quicker and cheaper when they work.

FAQ

Common Infiniti questions.

Can you do an Infiniti Q50 smart key on-site?

Yes — Q50 is the most common Infiniti call. Intelligent Key with proximity, programmed in your driveway in 30–60 minutes. Same approach across Q50 base, Sport, Red Sport 400, and the legacy G37 sedan it replaced.

What about the QX80 full-size SUV?

QX80 (current 2025+ 3rd gen, plus 2nd gen 2011–2024) uses the standard Infiniti Intelligent Key platform — same Nissan Armada underpinnings with Infiniti-specific fob design. Within our equipment coverage; AKL supported.

Do you handle older Infiniti Q70 (replaced the M-series)?

Yes. Q70 (2014–2019, renamed from M-series 2011–2013) used the standard Nissan / Infiniti Intelligent Key platform. Still well-supported by our equipment, including the Q70L extended-wheelbase variant.

Are Infiniti keys interchangeable with Nissan keys?

The underlying chip programming is shared (same Nissan NATS / Intelligent Key platform), but the physical fobs are different (Infiniti branding, premium materials, distinct button layouts). We carry Infiniti-specific fobs in inventory — no swapping an Altima fob into a Q50.

What about legacy G35 and G37 (the sedan / coupe enthusiast favorites)?

Yes — G35 sedan + coupe (2003–2007 V35, 2008–2013 sedan V36), G37 sedan + coupe (2008–2013, 2014–2015 Q60 rebrand), and the IPL variants are all within our equipment coverage. These are increasingly enthusiast / collector vehicles — we have the right chip-era programming and the right blanks.

Do you do the legacy FX35 / FX45 / FX50 and the EX35 / EX37 (the older crossovers)?

Yes. FX35 / FX45 (2003–2008 1st gen, 2009–2013 2nd gen), FX37 / FX50 (later 2nd gen), EX35 / EX37 (2008–2013) — all well-supported. The QX70 (2014+ rebadge of FX) uses the same platform. JX35 (2013, became QX60 in 2014) also covered.
