Key technology

Land Rover / Range Rover key & immobilizer technology.

Most generic locksmiths can't program Land Rover / Range Rover — different brands run different immobilizer architectures and require platform-specific equipment. Land Rover / Range Rover's system has evolved across multiple generations, and each one changes what's possible. Find your model below.

Land Rover and Range Rover share the JLR keyless platform with Jaguar but with significantly different fob casings and theft-vulnerability history. The pre-2018 JLR fobs (covering most Range Rover Sport L494, Evoque L538, Discovery 4) were the central target of the UK relay-attack epidemic — keyless entry signals could be amplified from inside a house to unlock a Range Rover at the curb. JLR responded with motion-sensor fobs starting roughly 2018 model year that put the fob to sleep when stationary, mitigating but not fully eliminating the attack. We advise Faraday pouches on every older Range Rover key replacement. The current L460 Range Rover uses a redesigned fob with stronger encryption and biometric integration on premium trims. Activity Key wearable wristband replacement and pairing is fully supported (along with ECU / transmission / RFH module programming when needed). Blade cuts: HU101 across modern JLR. Defender (reintroduced 2020) uses the current L460-era platform and fob.

Common problems

Common Land Rover / Range Rover key problems & what we do about them.

Before you assume you need a new key, here's what usually goes wrong with Land Rover / Range Rover keys — and how we diagnose before charging.

Why won't my Range Rover start with the key?

Most common: dead fob battery, fob desync after a 12V battery jump or replacement, or a failing JLR keyless module. We diagnose on-site. A new key won't fix a module-side fault, and we'll tell you before charging.

Can a locksmith really program a Range Rover key?

Yes — we carry the JLR-platform equipment for current L460 Range Rover, L494 Sport, Velar, Evoque, Discovery, Discovery Sport, and the new Defender. Programmed in your driveway, not at the dealer. 20–30 minutes typical for spares; 30–60 minutes for all-keys-lost.

Lost the only key to my Range Rover — what now?

All-keys-lost on current JLR is within our equipment coverage. 30–60 minutes typical depending on platform. Bring proof of ownership and VIN. We arrive, pull the immobilizer data, cut, program — done on-site.

Range Rover relay-attack theft — can you help with security?

Older JLR fobs (pre-2018-ish) are vulnerable to relay attacks — the well-known UK theft pattern. Current JLR fobs include motion sensors that put the fob to sleep when stationary, mitigating the attack. We can advise on Faraday pouches and current-spec fob upgrades during the visit.

FAQ

Common Land Rover / Range Rover questions.

Can you replace a Range Rover smart key on-site?

Yes — Range Rover (current L460 and previous L405 generations) is one of our most-requested luxury European calls. Smart key with proximity entry, programmed on-site in 20–30 minutes typical.

What about the new Defender (reintroduced 2020)?

New Defender uses the current JLR platform shared with Range Rover. Standard JLR programming approach. Activity Key supported.

Do you handle Range Rover Sport SVR and Defender V8?

Yes — both performance trims use the standard JLR key platform as their non-performance counterparts. The performance work is mechanical and engine, not keys.

Older Range Rover (Classic, P38, L322) — still possible?

Older Range Rover keys are within our equipment coverage for most years. Pre-2002 Range Rover Classic uses simpler transponder systems. Call ahead with VIN to confirm coverage on your specific year.

Can you program JLR control modules — ECU, transmission, RFH?

Yes. Beyond key work, we program JLR control modules when they need to be replaced or paired: ECU (engine control unit) swaps, transmission control module (TCM) coding, RFH (Radio Frequency Hub) module pairing. Useful when a module fails or after collision repair / used-part installation. Bring VIN and the part details before dispatch.
